This scan will produce images of the carotid arteries in the neck, these arteries are crucial because they are responsible for carrying blood from the heart to the brain. Blockages in these arteries can cause a stroke. If blockages are found, the problem can be fixed before severe and even life threatening problems occur. When performed, the test measures the thickness of the inner two layers of the carotid artery (the intima and media). This test can detect any thickening before any symptoms are present. This is a proactive test, especially for individuals with a family history of heart disease.
